I enjoyed my day, despite the small entry. I bore in mind that this is the smallest retriever, and has medium or moderate throughout its description in the standard. I thought the quality of the dogs present was much stronger than bitches, and have also observed this throughout the years since the breeds arrival in UK. Temperaments were excellent. I was surprised by lack of muscle in some of my exhibits in this active, busy breed.
Junior Dog (no entries)
Post Graduate Dog (1 entry)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN SEVERN Balanced dog with kind eye and correct ears. Well ribbed, good heart room, in coat, good bone. Correct tail carriage. Level topline, which he held on move. Moved with drive. RBD. |
Open Dog (2 entries)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN DETROIT Litter brother and very similar to RBD, but better made throughout. Quality, up to size, masculine specimen in full coat. Attractive correct head and pleasing expression. Good front and angles, deep and well sprung ribs. Neat tight feet, good pasterns, well marked. Moved with drive and balance in harmony with handler. Correct tail carriage. BOB. Absent in the Group. |
2nd | Strevens AQUACADIAN FLIN THE RED AT TOLLISTY Large dog in good coat. Good ears from an untypical, but still very attractive masculine skull with kind expression and eye. Liked his ribbing, rear angles, stifles, and tail carriage, but moved closer behind than winner. |
Junior Bitch (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Trickett TOLLPEPPER TARTU Mid sized bitch. A little long coupled. Well marked. Used her ears well. Needs more bone throughout and tighter pasterns. Would like more drive when moving. |
2nd | Strevens DECOYMANS PIPER CINDER AT TOLLISTY Pretty head and eye. Correct ears. Short coupled, with correct leg length. Jaunty movement. Upright shoulder, left her jacket at home on the day. |
Post Graduate Bitch (4 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN RED ROCK Outline spoilt due to vet shaving of underside. Correct size, good head and soft expression. Well angulated front. Correct tail carriage Neat mover, but a little closer behind than the male in the challenge. BB. |
2nd | Black DINASKARREK'S RED VIXEN AT SEAHAVEN Lighter bitch, strong head with more upright shoulders than 1. Lovely topline, held on the move. Moved well. Preferred head of 1. Would have been strongly considered for reserve bitch had she been present during challenge. |
3rd | Strevens DECOYMANS PIPER MAGGIE AT TOLLISTY |
Open Bitch (3 entries, 2 absent)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN NANIKA Lovely dark red colour. Wedge shaped head, almond shaped kind eye, correct ears. Good front and angles, correct height. Lacked sparkle. Needs to lose some weight which would give her far more advantage in the ring. RBB. |
