Having judged a good entry of this breed a few months ago and given my impression of the breed on the day as being a mixed one, I am delighted to report the exhibits before me on the day presented me with fewer concerns as to the future direction of this breed. The quality indeed made it a delight to judge your most attractive Tollers and I thank all exhibitors for the high standard of dogs and quality of presentation. On this occasion type was well established, ear set and carriage were excellent, coats clean, full and of good texture with undercoat present and the most improved feature had to be movement. It truly was a pleasure to assess every dog.
Veteran Dog or Bitch (2 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Powley JABY LAVENDER AT DANEHAVEN A glorious typical, ten year Toller bitch presented in lovely condition, attractive head and expression, still strong with defined moderate stop and bright eyes, well set, with tight rims. Neat ears of correct set and size, good bone still and firm feet standing on a straight, true front. This bitch is firmly coupled but with nice length and good bend of stifle and clear presence of undercoat and overall bloom. Well muscled hindquarters for age and a sound mover. Best Veteran. |
Puppy Dog or Bitch (1 entry)
1st | Young FALLOWFEN'S SILVER CAIRN A pleasingly attractive young bitch, obviously needing time but with all the basics in place. A clear wedge shaped and typical head with willing, kind expression, adequate muzzle and stop. Typical overall breed outline, straight, true front with plenty of bone for her age, well laid shoulders and moderate length of neck. She possesses an attractive coat of good length and texture, lying close extending fulsomely down her tail which was of correct length and carried well on the move. Sound on the move, if slight close behind, which should improve with development and maturity, presented in lovely clean condition and body for her age. Best Puppy. |
Junior Dog or Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Smith KYMIN IMPOSTER A most typical and attractively marked Toller with balanced blaze and alert, bright expression, handsome face on balanced head proportions and deeply attractive eye colour and allure of expression. Excellent conformation throughout, well sprung ribcage reaching well back, level topline, nothing overdone and carrying just the right amount of body for his age. Straight and true on his legs and viewed as correct all round standing from front and rear. Stifles well bent and tail carriage correct. A super double coat, presented in lovely clean condition and moved very soundly in a jaunty and springy manner. Both these class winners seemed to present as new exhibitors to the breed and I am sure they will be given every encouragement to get out and campaign their lovely exhibits. |
2nd | Young FALLOWFEN'S SILVER CAIRN |
Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Loebel DANEHAVEN MCEACHERN Another typical dog with a lovely wedge shaped head and true expression though I would not want to see eye any darker in colour. Beautifully balanced head with good muzzle, ears well set and hanging correctly close, correct bone and firm feet, depth of body and firm over the loin with correct length in the body, level topline and tuck up present. Good bend of stifles, a springy, reachy mover, sound and with a thick, well coated tail which he carried to work advantage. |
2nd | Powley DANEHAVEN RED ROCK Excellent type again, feminine with typical head, expression, eye and ears, well angulated throughout with more spring of rib than the first and strong over the loins. Moving soundly with power and good tail carriage. Coat starting to blow at bit on the day. Reserve Best Bitch. |
Limit Dog or Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN SEVERN This striking, medium sized dog was one of the darker coated in the entry and his overall balance, splendid angulation and muscle tone shone through in his construction and condition. He has true poise when standing and portrays as a very honest retriever, kind and willing to do a days work in a dedicated and keen manner. His skull is broad and well shaped with plenty of strength and length in the muzzle and correct stop, eye rims tight and well shaped. Excellent straight, true front, spring of ribcage and depth of body, strong over the loin with bushy tail carried well. Muscled hindquarters with deep second thigh and a very good mover. Reserve Best Dog. |
2nd | Kelman SHOREDANCER BEACHCOMBER A very well made dog of similar age to the winner and equally maturing nicely into a handsome, typical example of the breed. Well constructed throughout with pleasing length and strength of neck on well placed shoulders and good spring of ribcage, indeed he possessed even more bone than the winner and firm, tight feet. Strong and muscled over the loins, equally so in the hindquarters with good second thigh though his tail set is a bit low. His head is typical in it being wedge shaped and not overdone but I felt was lacking in foreface and not quite balanced, presenting as somewhat stumpy, he also seemed to feel the heat in the hall rather today, but remains a dog with much to admire about him. |
Open Dog (2 entries)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN DETROIT Brother to the winner of limit with the same outstanding qualities of breed type, striking outline and, in his case, presence in the ring. Another Toller so very well made and constructed that he has perfect balance when standing and the natural ability of a showman. His expression is mellow and yet focused on the work in hand, handsome head, beautifully balanced and strong without any exaggeration, ears correct in every way, neck strong and sweeping into well laid shoulders, deep set and elbows tight supported on strong bone and well arched toes on good pads. Deep bodied with well sprung ribs and firm level topline, with scope and length in the body, helps to add to a picture of a thoroughly well proportioned Toller with width and strength over the loins and some tuck up. He too has full muscled hindquarters with deep second thigh and well bent stifles and hocks turning neither in nor out. I consider his movement to be exceptionally good and an example of how the breed should track. A bushy well coated tail, carried correctly up completes the picture, polished off with a rich, full coat of correct texture and pleasing colour with undercoat present, lying flat and close, coat being the deciding factor over his brother on the day in declaring him Best Dog. As I stated at the outset of my report it was a pleasure to judge the exhibits present today and I was delighted to award him Best of Breed. |
2nd | Sayer DANEHAVEN MURRAY WITH HOLLYMIST An excellent type, many of the fundamentals are correct and as he approaches six years of age he should do very well as a veteran. A little more breadth of skull may be to his advantage but he is well angulated in the shoulders with good strength of neck, strong bone and firm feet. He would also have benefitted with a bit more spring of rib and condition today, losing his coat as he appeared to be, but he was against a winner in top form on the day. A pleasing outline overall if slightly over angulated in the stifles, he is short coupled and moved acceptably. |
Open Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Geddes DECOYMANS PIPER KESTREL A pleasing three year old, typical outline with plenty of length and scope to her frame and presented in good coat and condition. A wedge shaped head with correct stop and appealing eye and expression, ears neat well set and carried. Excellent overall angulation, medium length of neck, well sprung ribcage and strong bone on firm feet. Strong over the loin with slight tuck up she also possesses strength and muscle in the hindquarters. Moved soundly and acceptably on the move in true Toller style and I was pleased to award her Best Bitch. |
2nd | Powley DANEHAVEN JORDAN This bitch has a reasonably typical head and expression, perhaps not helped by sizeable ears, but appears a little unbalanced, being slightly short on the leg and wide and upright in shoulder. She is mature with lovely strength and width over the loins and well muscled hindquarters and deep second thigh, she also moves acceptably with drive. Reasonable bone and good feet are other virtues though she is rather oversprung in rib for me making her look a bit dumpy. |
