The last time I judged Tollers was at the WKC a couple of years ago, with quite a small entry. I remember that I found them quite difficult to judge, due to the size and type variance and disappointing movement. Here at WELKS, 41 dogs made 50 entries (there were 6 absentees) which I imagine was a reasonably representative entry. Again, I was struggling with size as clearly some were taller than the ideal height of 51 cms (48 cms for bitches), set out as a guide in the breed standard. The standard also calls for a short back and that the movement should give the impression of power, springy with good reach and drive. From my point of view (I hasten to say that I speak purely as an all rounder and not even a gundog specialist), I felt there weren't very many who fitted that description. On the plus side was the fact that after a long wait, all the Tollers were bright and eager to participate. They have engaging ways, are obviously intelligent and keen to please making them a suitable dog of medium size for an active family with an action packed lifestyle.
Puppy Dog (1 entry)
1st | Hodgson EURONOVA BUDDY BEAR 7 months, just needs a bit of schooling for the show ring, good topline and proportions, clean coat, still rather loose in front movement and needs to strengthen and settle in movement all round. |
Junior Dog (3 entries)
1st | Hickman FALLOWFEN'S STAR OF PADS 15 months, easy fluent mover which won him the class, well conditioned, attractive head, good outline. |
2nd | Holt RIVERWATCHER K'EYUSH 17 months, would prefer eyes a little darker but handsome with his rich colour which shone in the sun, well schooled showman, handled to very best advantage, fit and firm, moved ok but not quite as well as first, sired by my BOB. |
3rd | Brown STELLENBOSCH JACQUES FROST |
Post Graduate Dog (9 entries, 1 absent)
Good class.
1st | Moossun ERIKACHEN ARDEN AT WINDWHISTLER 23 months, good head and expression, excellent bone, well sprung ribs, firm body, moved and showed with animation, one of four from the same litter which later made up a very good breeders group. |
2nd | Clark FLANOVA GLENDRONACH Two and a half years, delightful character, responded well to his handler, friendly expression, kind eyes, good coat, does not want to carry any more weight but he carried himself well on the move. |
3rd | Baker ERIKACHEN AONGHUS Litter brother to first. |
Res | Andrews ERIKACHEN RUARI |
VHC | Clark FLANOVA ERIYADU ISLAND |
Open Dog (6 entries, 2 absent)
1st | Harding & Whitehill TREVARGH THE ENTERTAINER AT BRIZEWOOD BOB. 4 years old, up to size but I liked his ring presence and obviously qualified in superb form, coat glistening with good health and wellbeing, masculine head and outlook, great showman, moved with a purpose, good bone and body. |
2nd | Smith CAMUSMOR GLEN SCOTIA AT DALLYVISTA Res BD. 7 years old, good size and type, pleasing head, steady showman, well proportioned, in good condition, easy mover, could be better in front action. |
3rd | Stobbart CAMUSMOR WHATADREAM |
Res | Westwood & Johnson CAN/IR SH CH LITTLERIVER'S COLONIAL BOY WITH TOLLYHIMMEL (IMP CAN) |
Puppy Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Lovett NEILSHARBOUR JUNO BP. Ten and a half months, attractive head, well grown puppy, still carrying a bit of puppy fat but this did not affect her movement, clean coat, shade long cast. |
2nd | Diss & Haynes EURONOVA MIRABELLE 6 months, very feminine, sympathetically handled but needs to grow on and I should like a little more bone and substance, well proportioned, good coat. |
Junior Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Anstead RIVERWATCHER IKKUMA Litter sister to second in junior dog, intelligent expression, firm body, very fit, excellent coat, good overall proportions, moved and showed ok. |
2nd | Diss & Haynes EURONOVA MIRABELLE |
Post Graduate Bitch (10 entries, 2 absent)
1st | Gibson ERIKACHEN AOIFE DEARG RBB. Litter mate to first and third in post grad dog, won this class quite comfortably and gave the open bitch winner a good contest for BB. Quality head, lovely coat and condition, well muscled, held her topline on the move, keen showgirl, well handled. |
2nd | Black DINASKARREK'S RED VIXEN AT SEAHAVEN Two and a half years, relaxed, laid back character, feminine head and expression, good body and coat, sound mover, handled to advantage. |
3rd | Lovett NEILSHARBOUR WRENS WARREN |
Res | Trickett TOLLPEPPER TARTU |
VHC | Moult & Savory CORLITGOLD TAHLIA OF CROFTWELL |
Open Bitch (10 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Moult & Savory DECOYMANS PIPER MAPLE OF CROFTWELL BB. Lovely face, expressive eyes, excellent body, coat and condition, consistent showgirl, well muscled quarters, moved soundly. It was a close decision between first and second but on the last time round maple found another gear and was more collected on the move. |
2nd | Gibson CAMUSMOR ANY DREAM ULDO FOR ERIKACHEN Mum of the four in the breeders group and she should be proud of her very nice litter. Good honest bitch of five, bit short of coat today but she has nothing to hide, shade longer in back than first, well shown and handled. |
3rd | Westwood IR SH CH EUSANIT SKYS ROCKET |
Res | Moult & Savory CORLITGOLD MALILA OF CROFTWELL |
VHC | Anstead RIVERWATCHER IKKUMA |
