It was a special occasion when I judged the Tollers at Crufts, the first time they had their own classes, but to be invited to judge their first breed Championship Show, was something very very special. I thank the Committee and the Members for affording me this pleasant, precious appointment. I hope the dogs and exhibitors enjoyed the day as much as I did.
On such a bitterly cold, snow bound day, with such hazardous driving conditions, and a snow covered car park at the end of the journey, it was a tribute to so many exhibitors having travelled such long distances, something I appreciated. At the lunch break, it was great to see the Tollers outside in the snow showing their typical tolling temperament and abilities. It would have been exciting to judge them outside, but certainly not very comfortable or practical!
Veteran Dog or Bitch (8 entries, 3 absent)
1st | Westwood & Johnson CAN/IR SH CH LITTLERIVER'S COLONIAL BOY WITH TOLLYHIMMEL (IMP CAN) Liked his head shape and proportions, correct eye, ear shape and set. Good bone and front, well ribbed, balanced angulation shoulder and rear. Correct coat texture. Moved true front and rear, reach and drive in profile, with correct head and tail carriage. A bonus, was his 'typical' sad expression when standing, and then, 'all change' alert, bright on the move – something which should be so typical in this breed. BVIS. |
2nd | Powley DANEHAVEN TASEKO |
3rd | Bradley CAMUSMOR KNOCKANDO AT RUDDYDUCK BEG EX Very little to separate these two. Both with excellent head shape, eye, ear shape and set. Both with typical expressions. 1 carrying a little too much weight, which made her move a little wide in front, 2 in firm muscular condition. Both with well constructed, balanced bodies. Both moved with correct head and tail carriage. Today just thought the bitch had the edge in coat and profile movement. |

Puppy Dog (5 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Baker TIVALAKE ON THE TOWN Absolutely sound, confident temperament. Head developing nicely, good eye, ear shape and set, strong muzzle. Liked his overall body proportions and properties. Enough substance, good bone, front and feet. In good coat, happy, true on the move. |
2nd | Brock TIVALAKE DEEP IN MY HEART Litter brother and similar in many ways. Similar head, expression and confident attitude. Good bone and feet. Not quite as developed in depth of rib at this stage, so looking a little immature. Very true with correct tail and head carriage on the move. |
3rd | Parr KYMIN NEPTUNE |
Res | Westwood EUSANIT CHASE THE ACE |
Junior Dog (2 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Moult & Savory ACANUCK SOUL REBEL OF CROFTWELL At this age, head developing well. good eye, ear shape and set, typical expression standing and then the alert, interested expression on the move. Good length of rib, angulation of shoulder blade, upper arm and quarters. In good coat. Happy on the move, just needing to tighten in front movement. |
Novice Dog (3 entries)
1st | Fielder & Ashton PLAYING THE FIELDER First show for dog and handler. Although looking low on the leg at this age, I liked his overall substance, body proportions and properties. Good bone and feet, well ribbed, even at this age, strong loin, best of toplines. Well shaped head, with correct eye, ear shape and set, strong muzzle, correct skull. Extrovert, confident character, moved with correct head and tail carriage. Outstanding for coat texture, colour and condition – an area where many were lacking today. |
2nd | Parr KYMIN NEPTUNE Liked his overall body properties and particularly his proportions. His head is developing nicely, he has the brightest expression looking as though given the opportunity he is up to all sorts of lovely mischief. Just oozing with character which today was his undoing. He gave his handler a hard time, particularly on the move. Moved with his head almost in the handlers pocket which gave him a high stepping gait, ruined his topline, but at this young age prefer to keep the lovely temperament and character. |
3rd | Woollerton MELANITTA CHILLICOTE AT CULMGILLIE |
Graduate Dog (4 entries, 2 absent)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN TUNULIC Scored here with his masculine, balanced, developed head. Good bone and substance. Excellent coat, came to his own on the move, alert, true, good reach and drive with correct head and tail carriage. |
2nd | Baker TIVALAKE COOL YULE Well ribbed body, typical expression. Not moving to advantage at the rear today. |
Post Graduate Dog (7 entries, 4 absent)
1st | Burchell TIVALAKE JINGLE BELL ROCK Liked his head proportions and properties, eye, ear shape and set. Good length and angulation of blade and upper arm. Little out of coat today, which detracted from his overall balance for his good size. Scored with his movement, good in profile, true front and rear, good reach and drive, firm topline, correct head and tail carriage. |
2nd | Baker TIVALAKE COOL YULE |
3rd | Ward FLUSHPOINT WHATA ARISTOCRAT AT MELANITTA (IMP SWE) |
Limit Dog (9 entries, 3 absent)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN SEVERN Typical expression and body language at rest – so calm, but just waiting for something exciting to happen. Excellent body construction, good length and angulation of blade and upper arm, balanced by equally well angulated, muscular quarters, and joined by good length, depth and spring of rib, strong loin. In excellent, well presented coat. Moved true, good reach and drive, firm topline, correct head and tail. |
2nd | Parr KYMIN INNUENDO Close up – liked his expression and attitude. Good bone and feet, enough substance. Good body proportions and properties. In excellent coat, wonderful temperament. Very happy on the move, just not moving as true today. |
3rd | Rogers EUSANIT TAKE IT EASY Completed an outstanding class. |

Open Dog (5 entries)
1st | Harding & Whitehill TREVARGH THE ENTERTAINER AT BRIZEWOOD CC & BIS. For me just screams type, quality. Presented and handled to perfection, but that is just the icing on the cake. I like his size, masculine, everything in proportion. Excellent head properties and balance, correct eye, ear shape and set, strong muzzle, correct shape and breadth of skull. His good length and angulation of blade and upper arm, match his strong, muscled angulated quarters. Good length and depth of rib, strong loin. Best of toplines, in excellent coat of correct texture. Moved true front and rear, good reach and drive, correct tail and head carriage, alert, looking as though for all his glamour, he could do the job he was bred for. |
2nd | Powley DANEHAVEN DETROIT RCC. |
3rd | Hanvey & McAlister IR SH CH TASARLA SNOW SHOWER AT DREAMYRIVER A lot to like about these two, only separated by 'on the day points'. Liked both heads, expressions, preferred the topline and upper arm on 3, both enough substance, good bone and feet. Both had correct head and tail carriage on the move, were true good reach and drive. Just thought 2 had the slight edge in coat today. |

Puppy Bitch (5 entries)
1st | Smith & Parr KYMIN MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Really fell for this one. The most impressive outline, really well balanced head, correct balance of skull to muzzle good eye shape and set – confident, but steady expression. Well constructed body, enough length of leg, good length and angulation of blade, which matched quarters. Length of rib, enough depth and spring, strong loin. In excellent coat, presented and handled to perfection. Moved with such confidence for a youngster, true front and rear, good reach and drive, correct head and tail carriage. RCC & BP. |
2nd | Buckingham KYMIN MEDART Litter sister. Similar typical expression and attitude. Well ribbed body, a larger mould, so still needing to mature to balance out. Carrying enough weight. Confident, happy on the move. |
3rd | Burchell TIVALAKE COVER GIRL |
Res | Rogers EUSANIT CHASE THE DREAM |
VHC | Collins & Powley DANEHAVEN DETROYES |
Junior Bitch (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Buckingham KYMIN MEDART |
2nd | Rogers EUSANIT CHASE THE DREAM Very sweet, feminine expression. Feminine all the way through, plenty of potential, rib developing nicely, in good coat of correct texture, very much a delightful baby, looking very immature at the moment. |
Novice Bitch (2 entries)
1st | Gibson ERIKACHEN NIAMH DEARG Really attentive, bright, giving the impression she was ready to 'get up and go'. Good length of rib, firm topline, good bone and substance. In excellent coat. O.K. on the move. Would like just a touch more length of leg to balance out her body. |
2nd | Burchell TIVALAKE COVER GIRL Very sweet, feminine puppy. Excellent front and feet, rib developing well, but obviously at this age needing to deepen in rib. Confident, happy on the move. |
Graduate Bitch (5 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Parr DANEHAVEN PELLY ON KYMIN Type, quality – feminine but gives the impression of a real working toller. Grand body properties and proportions. Lovely head, feminine, but with required strength of muzzle, Well ribbed, strong body, in hard muscular condition. Best of temperaments, her tail didn't stop wagging until she started to move, and then it was carried correctly, very true on the move. |
2nd | Powley DANEHAVEN YAMASKA Another with a lovely, typical head and expression. Good bone and feet, Well ribbed, well constructed all through. In excellent coat, nit picking between these two, would just like a touch more length of leg, but still loved her for type, temperament, quality. |
3rd | Rice TOLLERICE AIVAZOFF |
Res | Buckingham REDAURORA CHRISTMAS VIXEN |
Post Graduate Bitch (6 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Powley DANEHAVEN RED ROCK Impressive in profile, and did not disappoint when handling her. Loved her head, eye, ear shape and set, well balanced skull/muzzle, typical expression standing and then the 'get up and go' expression on the move. Good bone and front, good length and angulation of blade and upper arm, length of rib, strong loin and quarters. In good coat, O.K. on the move. Just not concentrating and steady at the challenge. |
2nd | Anstead RIVERWATCHER IKKUMA Confident, bright, alert. Good feet, good length and angulation of blade and upper arm, firm topline. Not moving at her best in profile today, and not in her best coat. |
3rd | Chapman DECOYMANS THE DREAMWORKER |
Res | Buckingham REDAURORA CHRISTMAS VIXEN |
VHC | Strevens DECOYMANS PIPER CINDER AT TOLLISTY |
Limit Bitch (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st | Russell & Smith RIVERWATCHER YAKONE AT CEDARLAKE AW(B) Liked everything about this typy bitch. Lovely head, typical expression, very impressive profile standing. Good bone and feet, perfect front, strong pasterns. Well constructed shoulder, good length, depth and spring of rib, strong loin and quarters. Good coat of correct texture. Firm topline, held on the move. True front and rear, good reach and drive in profile movement. In contention for top honours today, but wayward on the move in the challenge. |
2nd | Westwood ALLIANCE DE LA VIE SUMMER DREAM TO EUSANIT (IMP NLD) Outstanding for breed type. Head, body, topline, coat, attitude, all 'out of the top drawer'. Moved well in profile with correct head and tail carriage, just a little untidy in front movement today. |
Open Bitch (11 entries, 2 absent)
Excellent class, both numerically and for type and quality.
1st | Gibson ERIKACHEN AOIFE DEARG In top form to head this class. Presented a very balanced, feminine, type outline. Balance of head, eye, ear, expression all to my liking. Good front and feet, enough bone. Well constructed, mature, balanced body. In firm muscular condition. Really scored with her true movement, good reach and drive, correct head and tail carriage. CC. |
2nd | Morgan REDAURORA COMET'S CHRISTMAS OF DELTANDAMBA Liked her head properties and balance, typical expression. Straight front good feet, enough bone and substance. Mature body, well constructed shoulder, good length, depth and spring of rib, strong loin, could have slightly more muscle on quarters, which would improve the topline, but really nit picking! Moved true, good reach and drive, alert, energy plus. Grand temperament. |
3rd | Parr KYMIN IPSO FACTO Completed a trio of lovely bitches. |
