The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of United Kingdom held an open show at Tomlinsons Kennels & Canine Centre with an excellent entry & a lovely atmosphere which continued throughout the day. I was very lucky with my two stewards who kept the show running smoothly.
It was in 2008 that I judged the breed at Crufts with an entry of 99 & I am afraid to say that I could not see a great improvement from then. There were still plenty of typical dogs but there was also the longer bodied, shorter legged type which I have seen before. Toplines also seem to be a problem with a few having a dippy topline & rising over the hindquarters which in these specimens are also straight in stifle.
On saying the above I was delighted with my winners & I can see some with lots of potential to improve the breed in size & shape. Temperaments too was excellent in all, even youngsters at their first show seemed to show no worry about being in such a large hall with lots of other dogs & people, so well done one & all.
BIS went to the junior bitch, Eusanit Apple Of One's Eye; RBIS was Riverwatcher Atka; & BPIS Tivalake How Can I Be Sure.
Veteran Dog or Bitch (8 entries, 2 absent)
1st | Westwood & Johnson CAN/IR SH CH LITTLERIVER'S COLONIAL BOY WITH TOLLYHIMMEL (IMP CAN) He was looking lovely, the last time I judged him was in 2009 & he seems to have just matured into a cracking dog & I see he is the sire of the BIS, so he is obviously passing on his quality & type to his progeny. He is very typical & of a good size & proportion, very masculine in outlook with an excellent head & expression, well boned legs & feet, well set tail from a strong topline with a good ribcage, moved & showed well. RBD. |
2nd | Hanvey & McAlister INT/IR SH CH TASARLA SNOW SHOWER AT DREAMYRIVER Another lovely dog of quality with a good head & expression, good eye of a nice shape with good ears, well set & carried, well boned legs & feet, good topline & tailset, nice hindquarters, moved well using his well construction front extension to advantage. |

1st | Vernon TIVALAKE HOW CAN I BE SURE Lovely headed puppy at only 6 months & at his first show, as well as his owners! When they got the hang of it, he moved well on well boned legs & feet, in excellent coat & condition, just a baby but with a lovely head & expression, good eye of the correct shape, lovely neck & shoulders, good body proportions & a lovely hindquarter, when he settled he set up well showing the potential which I know he possesses. BPIS. |
2nd | Woollerton CAMUSMOR CHILI PEPPER AT CULMGILLIE Mature dog who at present is higher behind but when this settles he should be fine because when he moved he moved with ease & style, good head & expression, well set ears which were well carried, good neck & shoulders, of a good size & proportion. |
