My thanks for being invited to judge at your Breed Club Championship Show, a great atmosphere, good stewards and some pleasing dogs to go over.

As a Gundog All-Rounder and a Retriever person first and foremost it hit me that I did not find too many of the fronts that I expected. You are a Retriever breed, so picking up birds tirelessly requires the correct lever construction to the forehand. Your Standard says very little, but the Canadian Standard (Country of origin) states "the shoulder blade and upper arm are roughly equal in length with the upper arm well angled back under the body".

I know the breed is still evolving here in the UK, so many things have been sorted out already, size of leg length etc, but some still need attention to make the dog as functional as possible, so points to watch to me seem, feet & pasterns and the rear movement which could be rather close at times. You know your breed better than me – but as a judge of retrievers for over forty years, who tries to make sure all her own dogs are as functional as possible these points will only make for a more balanced working dog.

I was so pleased to see such good entries in both dogs and bitches in your Special Working Classes, I know I have "gone on a bit" but sometimes it needs an outsider to take in the whole picture.

Veteran Dog (10 entries, 1 absent)

1^st	Harding & Whitehill GLENDERMACKI FOX CRAGG AT BRIZEWOOD 7½ years, nicely mature, good head and expression, correct through the body with pleasing angles to the fore and rear quarters, good spring to the rib, short strong loin with pleasing topline, tailset and carriage, moved out well on good legs and feet in excellent coat. Best Veteran, Reserve Best In Show and Reserve Dog CC.
2^nd	Powley DANEHAVEN TUNULIC 8 years old, good masculine head, super ribs, loin, topline and tailset, well made fore and aft, very sound on the move, in excellent coat.
3^rd	Burchell TIVALAKE JINGLE BELL ROCK SHCM RL2 Excellent balanced outline, just preferred heads on 1 & 2, pleasing angles fore and aft, good ribs, stifle, loin fraction longer than 1 & 2, well held topline and good tailset and carriage, sound mover in excellent coat.

1^st	Rogers EUSANIT PEAKY BLINDER Best Puppy Dog, Best Puppy in Show
2^nd	Westwood EUSANIT PROPER JOB Two litter brothers of 7 months, very similar as one would expect in type, heads just right for age, good balanced outline, pleasingly constructed through the body, with excellent ribs, loin and toplines, good bone and feet moving out soundly. I was a little concerned maybe incorrectly with the amount of white going up the legs – the reason for my placings.
3^rd	Hunt RIVER WISE OF GREAT PLEASURE AT WAKADUZE (IMP BEL) 9 months, good size, pleasing head nice bite, excellent rib, loin topline and tailset, bone on 1 & 2 a little stronger and feet a little tighter, moved out soundly.

1^st	Newson TIVALAKE LET'S MISBEHAVE JW 17 months, loved his balanced outline, pleasing head proportions, well constructed fore and aft with excellent turn of stifle good 1st & 2nd thighs, well made through the ribs loin, topline and tailset and carriage in super coat moving soundly.
2^nd	Macleod CAMUSMOR AMORIS 15 months, good head, excellent balanced outline, correct fore and aft construction ribs on 1 a little more spring, strong loin, topline and well set tail with good carriage, well turned stifle with good second thigh, a sound mover in good coat.

1^st	Barker EUSANIT SILVR DREAM MACHINE 19 months, loved his overall balance, good masculine head, pleasing angles to front and rear quarters, strong loin and topline, well set and carried tail, good turn of stifle, with strong second thigh, a sound mover on good legs and feet.
2^nd	Copeland CAMUSMOR BRINGMESUNSHINE TO MENSTONIA Soundly made, with good angles to front and rear, well made through the ribs, loin topline and tailset. Good bone and feet a sound mover 1 just had the edge here.

Novice Dog (2 entries)

1^st	Westwood EUSANIT PROPER JOB
2^nd	Anstead RIVERWATCHER KILA 10 months slightly rangier balanced outline, pleasing head, sound through the body, 1's ribs had little more spring, moved out well on well boned legs and good feet, 1's just a little more positive.

Graduate Dog (4 entries)

1^st	Adshead AFONBACH WINTER IS COMING JW 18 month of good size and balanced outline. Loved his head, good neck set into well made forequarters, excellent ribs, loin topline, tailset and carriage, well turned stifle with good 1st & 2nd thighs well boned legs and good feet, in excellent coat and a sound mover.
2^nd	Vernon TIVALAKE HOW CAN I BE SURE 5 years, good overall balance, pleasing head, nice angles to front and rear, topline on 1 more positive, well set and carried tail, good legs and feet, sound mover in good coat.
3^rd	Johnson STELLENBOSCH ALAMEDA OF TARNLAIKERS (AI) 2 years old, a good balanced outline, smaller size but nice package, pleasing in head, good through the ribs, loin, well made rear quarters with good 1st & 2nd thigh, a sound mover.

1^st	Collins & Powley DANEHAVEN KOVIK 2½ years old, he had the edge over two on overall balance, good masculine head, fair angles to front and rear, excellent spring of rib, strong loin excellent topline, super rear end with good 1st & 2nd thigh, moving out well on good legs and feet in excellent coat.
2^nd	Fuard TOLLELKIN BAY OF ICE 3 years old, good balanced outline, beautiful head, front and rear quarter balanced, 1's had little more muscle on rear end, good ribs(1's had edge), loin topline tailset and carriage, a sound mover on good legs and feet carrying a good coat.

2^nd	Titovets & Eremin HR CH MACDREAMS TRENT FROM CASHEL VALE JW RL3 (IMP NLD) 2½ years old darker red, balanced outline, pleasing head & expression, soundly constructed throughout, moving with purpose in excellent coat, 1 for me just had that extra something.
3^rd	Fielder SCHINDOW JUNIOR COWBOY WITH CRETSHENGAN 2½ years old, pleasing size and balance, with good headpiece, well made through the body with ex ribs, loin topline and tailset, moving out soundly on good legs and feet in good jacket.

3^rd	Ward MELANITTA MORNING GLORY 9½ years old, pleasing bitch sweet headed, good angles to front and rear, with good ribs, loin, topline and tailset, well muscled 1st and 2nd thigh, not the tight feet of 1 & 2, moving soundly in good coat.

2^nd	Gosnell KATMISTSKY'S ANN AGAIN 9 months, a little finer than 1 but well made with excellent outline and balance, sweet head and expression, soundly built, a little finer in bone than 1, sound little mover in excellent coat.
3^rd	Johnson TARNLAIKERS PERFECT PINK 11 months, well made through the body, good ribs loin, topline tailset and carriage, with nice conformation, excellent bone, super feet in pleasing coat, would have liked a darker eye.

2^nd	Smith TIVALAKE ANYTHING GOES AT TOLLISTY JW 17 months, excellent head and good balanced outline, front and rear quarters well made, strong topline and loin, well turned stifle and good second thigh, a sound mover, 1 just had the edge here, I would have liked a fraction more size.
3^rd	Nevers TIVALAKE EASY TO LOVE Litter sister to above, again I would have liked a little more size, she was soundly constructed front and rear good through the body, nice rear end with good low hocks, moved soundly in good coat.

3^rd	Edwards AFONBACH SONG OF ICE AND FIRE 18 months, well balanced bitch soundly made sweet expressive head, very well made stifle with good 1st and 2nd thigh, good bone and feet, in pleasing coat and a sound mover.

She refused to get her tail up, but I was judging her as a retriever and she was certainly fit to do that.

3^rd	Sharpe TIVALAKE CRYSTAL BALL AT ROSETTIA RL1-EX Full sister to 2nd in class, 17 months old, neat package, I like a slightly more robust bitch, she was well balanced throughout with good conformation, moving soundly on good legs and feet and in pleasing coat.
